What is Digital Foil?

Everything to know about Digital Foil

Updated over 2 months ago

Digital Foil is a modern technique for adding shiny metallic foil to your business cards without the need for traditional custom dies. This process uses advanced methods to apply the foil directly to your printed material, making it quicker and more cost-effective compared to traditional foil stamping.

How Does It Work?

Black elements in your artwork will be produced in foil. Just add these elements to your designated layer.

Digital Foil requires you to supply the areas you want foiled as solid black artwork. This is the same process as our Spot UV Business Cards, where you submit the file in black to indicate where you want the spot gloss effect to appear. For Digital Foil, any part of your design where you want the foil effect should be in black. You can choose to have the entire design in foil, just the text, or specific elements. For example, you can add a gold foil to your logo, make text stand out, or highlight intricate patterns.

Creating Your Artwork:

  • Design Elements: Make sure all elements you want foiled are in solid black.

  • Layers: If you are using Adobe Illustrator or InDesign, create separate layers for different parts of your design. Label one layer as "Art" for the full-color elements and another as "Foil" for the black elements you want foiled.

  • File Format: The best format for submitting your artwork is an EPS file. This ensures that your design elements remain sharp and clear.

Versatility: Digital Foil can be applied to various types of artwork, whether you have images, full-color designs, or just a background color. For example:

  • Images and Full-Color Designs: Add a gold foil overlay to highlight specific parts of your image or design.

  • Text and Patterns: Use foil to make your text or intricate patterns stand out.

  • Backgrounds: Create a simple yet elegant look by applying foil to a solid background color.

Advantages:

  • Quick Turnaround: Digital Foil Business Cards are produced with a quick 2-day turnaround, perfect for last-minute projects or events.

  • Cost-Effective: This method is more economical as it eliminates the need for custom dies.

  • Fine Details: Ideal for intricate designs, Digital Foil makes your artwork pop with precision and clarity.

  • Dynamic Printing: One of the most beneficial features is the ability to personalize each print without added setup fees. You can have each print with a different foil design, making it excellent for table cards, table numbers, or any project requiring unique prints. Limitations:

  • Stock: Digital Foil is only available on our Silk Matte (Soft Touch) stock, which offers a luxurious, velvety feel.
