How do I prepare my artwork for Digital Foil printing?

how to setup your file for digital foil printing

Updated over 4 months ago

Preparing your artwork for Digital Foil printing is essential to ensure the best possible results. Here’s a comprehensive guide to help you:

1. Understand How Digital Foil Works:

  • Digital Foil requires you to supply the areas you want foiled as solid black artwork. This means any part of your design where you want the foil effect should be in black.

  • You can choose to have the entire design in foil, just the text, or specific elements—anywhere you want the foil, it needs to be indicated in black.

2. Creating Your Artwork:

  • The best format for submitting your artwork is an EPS file. This format ensures that your design elements remain sharp and clear.

  • If you are using Adobe Illustrator or InDesign, create separate layers for different parts of your design:

    • Art Layer: This layer will contain the full-color elements of your design.

    • Foil Layer: This layer will contain the solid black elements that you want to be foiled. Label this layer clearly as "Foil" followed by the foil color, such as "Gloss Gold Foil."

3. Labeling and Organizing Layers:

  • Clearly label your layers in the layers menu to differentiate between the artwork and the foil elements.

  • For example, if you have a full-color design with foil accents, you should have two main layers:

    • Art Layer: Contains all the full-color elements.

    • Foil Layer: Contains all the elements you want to be foiled in solid black.

4. Submission and Inspection:

  • Once your artwork is ready, submit the EPS file with the clearly labeled layers.

  • Our team will carefully inspect your artwork to ensure everything is set up correctly for foil application.

  • We will check the placement, alignment, and clarity of the foil elements to ensure they print perfectly.

5. Final Tips:

  • Ensure all black elements in the "Foil" layer are solid black without any gradients or shades.

  • Double-check that all layers are properly labeled and organized.

  • If you have any questions or need assistance, our prepress team is here to help. We can guide you through the process and ensure your design is set up correctly for Digital Foil printing.

By following these steps, you can be confident that your Digital Foil Business Cards will be printed to the highest standards, with stunning foil accents that enhance your design.
